Facebook’s New & Exciting Search Facilities

By Lauren Simmiss on 02/04/2012

It has recently been announced that Facebook will be focusing on providing new search facilities within the platform.  When you currently use Facebook’s internal search facilities, you cannot search by products or services and it doesn’t provide further suggestions to search queries. It’s fair to say that most people do not use Facebook to find new products or services.

You might ask yourself how this affects your business? Well if Facebook does increase their search capabilities, this will give businesses the opportunity to create highly affective PPC ad’s and brands having to work to optimise their Facebook business pages to be at the top of search results.  Many businesses currently use Facebook to connect with their customers, post updates, and pictures. Social engagement has been the key factor for why businesses have joined the Facebook community.

Not only could Facebook sell PPC ads, but this will be a new search platform that will give Google a run for its money.  Over 250 million people are currently using Facebook and if new search facilities are created, people would stay on the platform longer and look to find products and services internally. It’s seems like Google and Facebook are trying to compete with one another if you look at Google’s new product Google +. This social platform has similar functionality to Facebook where you can create a profile and connect with people in your circles. Now, if Facebook creates new internal search facilities, this could deter people away from using Google to find products and services.

It’s hard to say exactly how viewers will interact with the new opportunities Facebook have put forward, but with the growing success of Facebook over the past few years; it’s fair to say that the search facility will help businesses to grow online. Also, from an SEO standpoint, there could be new opportunities as well.  This could mean businesses will be creating Facebook brand pages according to SEO guidelines.  However, we are yet to hear how exactly the new search facilities will integrate any form of SEO guidelines.

From Facebook’s standpoint, this is yet another money making opportunity because brands will want to be at the top of search queries. We will have to wait to see how Facebook decides to play this forward!!
